I (Quent) had a muzzle loader buck tag this year and took some time off work to go hunting. I talked dad into going to help around camp and the driving. We left Tuesday headed for southern Utah’s Boulder Mountain area, a place we’ve hunting the last six years or so years. Upon arriving we found our traditional camp sight was still ours and set up camp. As normal I set my tent a good distance from dad’s tent, so he wouldn’t keep me awake all night!
We checked out the area right at dusk and saw a lot of does’ with twins but nothing with any antlers. We also noticed that lack of other hunters zipping around on their four-wheelers. After a good meal of cold chicken dad set a huge fire and we just relaxed around the fire prior to heading to bed.
Opening morning (Wednesday) we got loaded up and started to drive to the area I was going to hunt that morning. We took our time as for the first time we hadn’t seen any other hunters early opening day headed toward our area. In driving we saw a few does and fawns but nothing with antlers.
We followed the road until it became an ATV tail head, an area we have hunted for the past few years. As dad checked out a doe I saw a buck and bailed out of the truck. As dad then saw the buck I had seen he told me there was a bigger one just behind him. Let’s just say that muzzle loaders aren’t that easy when the blood starts pumping and shit goes everywhere. BOOM! First shot a clean miss at 50 yards!!!!! Ok at that time all my reloading supplies are in a 20 foot area and the bucks are still within range.
Upon finally getting reloaded I had to wait for them to turn to give me another shot. I wasn’t trying to pick one over the other, I was just waiting for a good shot. BOOM! Deer hunt over 20 minutes into the hunt! Deer was 75 yards uphill along an ATV trail so getting him out wasn’t much of a problem. Not big but bigger than the only other buck I have taken with my mussel loader.
Dad and I then decided that we should stay a day and relax since camp was set up. We hiked a few new areas to get a better idea for next year but nothing that hard. Talked to a few hunters as this was the fewest we have ever seen and no one else had seen any bucks that day. We only heard two other shots the entire time we were hunting.
That night we cut a tree up and had a huge fire. Weather was great, it never got colder than 30 so we had a great time. The trees were just starting to change so there wasn’t much color around camp or on the mountains.
Had a fun time, good drive, and will enjoy the jerky!!!!
